New Year, New Car Care: Simple Checks That Could Save You Money in 2026

The New Year is all about fresh starts and while many of us focus on our health, finances or
home, our cars are often forgotten.

January is one of the best months of the year to look after your car. Cold weather exposes
weaknesses, small issues become obvious, and a few simple checks now can help you avoid
breakdowns, failed MOTs and expensive repairs later in the year.

Why January Is the Perfect Time for Car Care

Winter puts extra strain on vehicles. Cold starts, short journeys, wet roads and dark
mornings all take their toll.
By checking a few key items now, you can reduce the risk of breakdowns, improve safety in
poor weather, save money by fixing small problems early, and get ahead of upcoming MOTs
and servicing.
You don’t need to be a mechanic, you just need to possess a little awareness and the right
parts, of course!

Battery Health: The Number One Winter Failure
If there’s one part that causes more problems than any other in winter, it’s the battery. Cold
temperatures reduce battery performance, and many batteries that coped fine in summer
don’t survive winter mornings.
Signs your battery may be struggling include slow starting, dim dashboard lights, stop/start
systems not working, or a battery older than three to five years.

Lights & Visibility: See and Be Seen
With shorter days and poor weather, visibility is critical. Bulbs are one of the most common
MOT failure items, often because drivers don’t realise one has blown.
Wipers & Screenwash: Small Parts, Big Difference
If your wipers smear, squeak or leave streaks, they’re past their best. Winter-grade
screenwash is essential to prevent freezing and keep your windscreen clear.

Tyres: Grip Matters More in Winter
Check tyre tread depth, pressure and condition. While the legal minimum is 1.6mm, at least
3mm is recommended for winter driving.
Fluids: Protect Against Freezing & Overheating
Ensure coolant strength is sufficient, oil and brake fluid levels are correct, and screenwash
is winter-grade.

Make 2026 the Year You Look After Your Car
Even tackling one or two items this month can make a real difference. A well-maintained car
is safer, more reliable and cheaper to run.
